Many web developers used all sorts of tricks, shortcuts and different coding styles when developing HTML. This caused incompatibilities between systems amongst other problems. Think of xHTML as a stricter version of HTML, where web developers can not take any shortcuts, meaning the quality of the code is better and the compatibility of the code between systems is better.
